GPS INSIGHT 2022

Admin Management

For a better experience, please view this case study on a desktop screen.

I was the primary designer leading this project in Q1-Q2 2022 ideating early discovery and concepts, presenting regularly to leadership and subject matter experts, and delivering final designs for production.

I worked with multiple cross-functional teams including 2 product managers, a team of engineers, and team members from account management, user on-boarding specialists, and sales engineers.

GPS Insight is a fleet telematics software company. We sell devices that are installed into vehicles to help companies mitigate risk and track their assets. We work with companies from small businesses such as electricians who have several technicians in company vehicles in the field to government fleets who have hundreds of vehicles.

This was an initiative focusing primarily on our small business tier to bring the admin management functionality that exists in the old and outdated legacy platform into the new portal, where it does not yet exist. For this reason, our small business "standard tier" users are still using the outdated platform.

By bringing the features from legacy into the new portal, we can deprecate the old platform and users can be introduced to an experience where they have access to more features and can complete tasks with much more ease.

The redesign of the admin management feature also allows for GPS Insight to scale which was not possible in the old platform. From an additional business perspective, GPS Insight will have the opportunity to up-sell more users to our other product offerings and tiers.

Project summary

Before

After

Users are not able to manage entities such as users, drivers, vehicles or groups at scale. The only information that is given is the username and any action taken on a particular selection replaces the right card with a new card, with no way to get back to the previous card.

This causes users to have to move back and forth to double check their selections, and ultimately getting lost in their task flow. Admin users get frustrated with such a segmented and disjointed experience. They also felt the map was a waste of space for this task flow because view of the map is not needed to manage entities such as users or vehicles.

The Problem

Breakdown of Legacy Experience

Because "standard tier" users use the classic portal to perform certain tasks, they are unable to fully utilize the new portal.

This leads to:
1. Poor level of usability/experience overall and requires long on-boarding process, which is not scalable for future growth
2. Inability to up-sell to higher tiers of service or add-ons such as cameras or field service management software

Business Perspective

User Goals

Ability to Search

Batch Editing Controls

Streamlined Workflows

Our solution should provide users with the ability to search through data

Capabilities to edit, delete, and change group assignments for more than one item at a time

Users should be able to perform various tasks without having to leave the page, (ie. right card)

Search + Batch editing

  • Users previously struggled with having to delete users one by one leading to bloated data sets.
  • Instead of having to assign users to groups one by one, it can now be done in one action
  • If a group of users needed a password reset, the new functionality saves an admin time
  • Admins can now filter data through the search input

Streamlined Workflow

  • Users do not have to leave the page for any of their actions
  • The ability to create, edit, manage group assignments, and get more information can be done through the right drawer
  • Because the map is not needed in the admin workflow, it was previously taking up space that is now better utilized for the task at hand
